What a UV-C light does — and what it does not
Your evaporator coil is wet whenever the system is cooling. That combination of moisture, dust and darkness is close to ideal for mould and bacterial biofilm, which is why a coil that was spotless in spring can smell by August. A UV-C lamp aimed at the coil runs whenever the system runs, and keeps that surface from re-colonising.
It is worth being straight about the limits. Coil irradiation is well established. Whole-house air disinfection from an in-duct lamp is not: air moving through a duct passes the bulb in a fraction of a second, and most of what is in that air does not receive a meaningful dose. Anyone selling you an in-duct UV lamp as a way to sterilise the air in your home is overselling it. We install these for the coil.
When a UV-C light is worth installing
- Your coil has needed cleaning more than once in a few years
- A musty smell returns each cooling season after the system has been cleaned
- You are in a high-humidity climate where the coil rarely dries out
- The system runs long cooling cycles for most of the year
- Someone in the house has a confirmed mould sensitivity
This is the service where Boca Raton and the Triangle genuinely differ. A South Florida system may cool for ten months of the year, so the coil is almost never dry and growth gets a near-permanent foothold — which is why UV-C earns its keep there more often than it does in North Carolina, where the coil spends a good part of the year dry and idle.

Does a UV-C light actually work?
For keeping the evaporator coil clear of biofilm, yes — that is the application with the strongest evidence behind it, and it is what we install for. Claims that a single lamp sterilises all the air moving through your house are far weaker: air passes the lamp in a fraction of a second, which is not long enough for meaningful dose on most airborne organisms.
Where does the lamp go?
In the air handler, positioned to shine continuously on the wet side of the evaporator coil and the drain pan. That is where condensation keeps surfaces damp and where biological growth actually establishes itself.
How often does the bulb need replacing?
Roughly once a year for most lamps. UV-C output falls off well before the bulb stops visibly glowing, so a lamp that still lights up may be doing very little. The replacement interval for the specific lamp is on the unit.
Is UV-C safe in my home?
Inside a sealed air handler, yes — the lamp is enclosed in metal ductwork and is not visible or accessible during normal operation. UV-C is harmful to skin and eyes on direct exposure, which is why it is never installed anywhere it can shine into a living space, and why the system is powered down before any service.
Does it replace duct cleaning?
No. A UV-C lamp does nothing about dust, debris, or lint already sitting in the ducts, and it has no effect beyond the surfaces it directly illuminates. It is a way of slowing regrowth on a coil that has been cleaned, not a substitute for cleaning.
