Air Quality · Odors
A musty smell from your vents usually means moisture and mold or mildew somewhere in the HVAC system or ductwork — not just “dirty air.” Common causes include mold in the ducts, a clogged condensate drain, a dirty evaporator coil, or excess humidity. If cleaning the rest of the house hasn’t fixed the smell, the source is likely in the system. Here’s how to track it down.

Common causes of musty vent odor
- Mold/mildew in the ducts — most common in humid NC summers (mold in air ducts)
- Dirty evaporator coil or clogged condensate drain holding water
- Excess humidity in the home or crawlspace
- Debris or pests in the ductwork
We inspect to find the actual source, clean it, and recommend humidity fixes so the smell doesn’t come back. A quick filter change and dehumidifier help in the meantime.
