Why townhouse dryer vents clog so quickly
In a detached house the laundry usually sits on an outside wall and the vent runs a few feet straight outside. In a townhouse the outside walls are limited, so the laundry is often in the middle of the unit or on the top floor. The vent has to get out somehow, and the path it takes is rarely short.
- Vertical runs to the roof. Lint has to be pushed uphill. When airflow drops, it settles on the way up.
- Several elbows. Each turn slows the air and gives lint a place to collect.
- Runs inside shared walls or between floors. You cannot see or reach most of the duct.
- Roof hoods with screens or tight flaps. Lint collects at the exit, and birds sometimes nest there in spring.
- Tight laundry closets. The dryer gets pushed back until the flexible transition hose behind it is crushed flat.
Put two or three of those together and a vent can lose airflow much faster than a short straight run, particularly in a household that runs several loads a week.

Lint is fine, dry and burns easily. When a vent is partly blocked, the dryer runs hotter and longer, and lint sits right next to the heat.

Warning signs to watch for
- A normal load needs a second cycle to dry.
- The laundry closet or the top of the dryer feels unusually hot.
- You notice a burning or scorched smell while the dryer runs.
- Lint collects around the door seal or on the floor behind the dryer.
- The outside hood flap stays shut or barely moves while the dryer is on.
- The dryer shuts itself off partway through a cycle.

What you can check yourself
- Clean the lint filter before and after each load, as the U.S. Fire Administration advises.
- Pull the dryer out and look at the transition hose. If it is crushed, kinked or made of thin foil, it should be replaced with semi-rigid or rigid metal.
- Find the outside termination. On a townhouse it may be on the roof, and you should not climb up to reach it. From the ground, check whether the flap opens while the dryer runs.
- Do not push a brush kit up a long vertical run. It can compact lint or pull a joint apart in the attic.
If the run is long, climbs to the roof, or you cannot find where it ends, that is the point to call a professional.
The flexible plastic or foil type duct can more easily trap lint and is more susceptible to kinks or crushing, which can greatly reduce the airflow.

HOAs, shared vents and who is responsible
