Dryer Vent Safety
Clothes dryers cause thousands of home fires in the U.S. every year, and according to the NFPA the leading factor is failure to clean them — lint building up in the vent. Lint is highly flammable, and a clogged vent traps heat until it can ignite. The good news: regular dryer vent cleaning is the single most effective way to prevent it. Here’s what every homeowner should know.

Why dryer vents catch fire
As your dryer runs, lint slips past the trap and collects along the vent duct. Over time it restricts airflow, the dryer overheats, and the trapped lint — which ignites easily — can catch fire. The NFPA and U.S. Fire Administration both identify failure to clean as the leading cause of home dryer fires. Risk is higher with long vent runs, plastic/foil flex hose, and infrequent cleaning.
Warning signs of a dangerous vent
- Clothes are still damp after a full cycle
- The dryer, laundry, or room gets unusually hot
- A burning or musty smell during drying
- Visible lint at the outdoor vent flap, or the flap doesn’t open
How to prevent a dryer fire
- Clean the lint trap before every load
- Have the full vent professionally cleaned about once a year
- Replace plastic/foil flex hose with rigid or semi-rigid metal duct
- Never run the dryer while away from home or asleep if you suspect a clog
