Why two houses on the same street get different quotes
This is the question behind almost every call about price, and the answer is not evasive. Consider two houses in the same Cary or Raleigh subdivision, built the same year by the same builder.
The first has a ground-floor laundry room on an exterior wall. The vent is about eight feet of straight duct to a hood at waist height. One person, one set of rods, forty minutes, done.
The second has the laundry on the third floor because the owners converted a bedroom. The vent now runs about twenty-eight feet with three elbows and terminates in a cap on the roof. That job needs ladder access, roof work, longer rod sets, and it takes twice as long, because the lint is packed harder and there is more of it. Same street, same year, genuinely different job.

What should be included in any dryer vent cleaning price
Use this as a checklist when you compare quotes. If an item is missing, ask what it costs to add, because the difference is often the whole reason one quote is cheaper.
- The full length of the line, not just what a brush reaches from behind the machine before it hits a bend.
- The exterior hood and its damper flap. The most common blockage point and the most commonly excluded item.
- Moving and reconnecting the dryer, including taking a stacked unit apart if that is what it takes to reach the connection.
- Inspecting the transition hose behind the machine and telling you if it is crushed, torn, or made of a material that should not be there.

Is it worth the money? What you are actually buying
You are buying three things, in that order of importance.
- Removing the leading contributing factor in dryer fires. The federal figure is specific and worth reading as written.
- Getting your drying times back. A dryer fighting a restricted vent runs longer on every load, which shows up on the power bill month after month and shortens the life of the machine. This is the part that quietly pays for the service.

Air duct cleaning cost is a different question
People often ask for both prices in the same call, so it is worth separating them. A dryer vent and an HVAC duct system are unrelated, and cleaning one does nothing for the other. On the duct side, the Environmental Protection Agency is deliberately cautious: “EPA does not recommend that the air ducts be cleaned routinely, but only as needed.” It names three conditions where you should consider it: substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts or on other components of the system, ducts infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, and ducts clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris where particles are actually released into the home from the supply registers.
